Stop Smoking Aid Zyban Linked to Infant Heart Defects
Pity the poor woman who wants to quit smoking while she’s trying to get pregnant or during her pregnancy.
She may have been prescribed Zyban which is also known as Wellbutrin or generically as bupropion.
According to a recent study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, women who used Zyban/Wellbutrin/bupropion during the first trimester of pregnancy have an increased risk of having a baby with a heart defect.
Zyban is a pregnancy Category C medication meaning they are more likely to have some complications for mother or fetus, and/or, there isn't enough research to draw conclusions about their safety.
These Category C medications come with the warning to be used only if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks. Most prescription medications are classified in Category C.
