News of possible toxins found in Chinese drywall was mostly Florida based until January of 2009.

Up until then, local South Florida news stations like NBC2 and WINK-TV were the ones reporting the problems. Then the Lieutenant Governor of Florida discovered his Fort Meyers home contained the toxic wallboards. Suddenly stations as far as WAVY-TV in Norfolk, Virginia and WZTV in Nashville, Tennessee were reporting on the problem.

When Senator Bill Nelson and others lit up the cameras in Washington D.C. by bringing the issue before Congress, the national networks and major newspapers began to take notice. ABC, NBC and CNN have all reported on the issues surrounding the toxic hazards of the Chinese drywall. America's Watchdog had numerous blogs running on the issue. Lennar Homes even made headlines in the Wall Street Journal on January 12, 2009 when spokesmen stated the company would, at it's own expense, rebuild the affected homes it had produced. NewsInferno.com reported in detail the moves made by Lennar and interviewed owners of the homes recently built by the nation's second largest builder.

As news spread, other states begin investigating whether the toxic drywall was also in their citizens' homes. California, Louisiana and Alabama have found this to be true. Columbia Analytical Services in Simi Valley, California announced over the Associated Press wire in March, 2009 that it had come up with reliable and irrefutable testing methods to determine the presence of the sulfide toxins. A spokesman claimed they had been researching for over a year to find a legally binding method.

The topic gained national press attention again when legislation introduced by Florida's House Rep. Vern Buchanan and others was passed on May 7, 2009. Attached to the now famous HB178, it provides financial assistance to homeowners whose residence have been tested positive for the hazardous materials. Senator Bill Nelson issued a press release soon after stating the Environmental Protection Agency had found sulfur in the drywall samples they tested.

The more news coverage this issue gets, the better off homeowners may be. However, there is a down side. In the already plummeting real estate market, news coverage of the toxic drywall has almost halted new and newer home sales in South Florida. People are afraid to buy a home only to discover later it was one of the ones built with the Chinese drywall. Such is the Catch-22 of being in the news.
