Eli Lilly: trial data may not prevent Zyprexa slide
Contact: Michael Monheit, Esquire, Monheit Law, PC
Results of the study showed that patients remaining on Zyprexa for one year or more had a significantly lowered risk of violent behavior. No significant change in violence risk was found for subjects remaining on Risperdal for one year or more. The reduction in violent behavior associated with Zyprexa treatment was attributed to higher rates of medication adherence. This was notable as non-adherence and substance abuse often further compound the risk of violent behavior.
Zyprexa continues to represent a key source of revenues for Lilly, boasting global sales of $4,278 million in 2003 and contributing to over a third of the company's ethical sales. However, with numerous patent challenges to oral formulations of Zyprexa, Lilly is keen to maximize revenues and market share before generics enter the market by drawing attention to any benefits that the drug may possess over its rivals.
Although the study showed positive data for Lilly, it is unlikely to impact significantly on Zyprexa's current use. Lilly's drug has consistently been shown to promote significant weight gain, a key factor that, according to a Datamonitor patient survey, is a major reason for non-compliance.
