Zocor Muscle Injury Lawsuits
Alert! Alert! 80 mg Zocor cholesterol-lowering statin raises alarm for life-threatening muscle injury rhabdomyolysis.
It’s no secret since the beginning of statins that one of the side effects for statins has been an increased risk of muscle weakness and soreness known as myopathy.
Zocor (also known as simvastatin) comes in 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg doses.
Recently the FDA reviewed clinical trials, adverse event reports, observational studies, and prescription use data. What the FDA found -- is the higher the Zocor dose, the greater frequency of serious muscle injury or rhabdomyolysis.
Rhabdomyolysis is the most serious form of muscle injury and can lead to severe kidney damage, kidney failure, and sometimes death.
Healthcare professionals and people taking Zocor or families of people taking Zocor should be on the alert regarding 80 mg doses of simvastatin and Zocor statin injury. Vytorin 10/80 has 10 mg of Zetia and 80 mg of Zocor. Please be on the alert for Vytorin, another cholesterol-lowering statin, too.
In March 2010, the FDA issued a revised label based on interim results from an ongoing clinical trial – the Heart Protection Study 2. Here are the cautions: 1) patients of Chinese descent should not receive simvastatin 80 mg with cholesterol-modifying doses of niacin-containing products; 2) caution is to be used when such patients are treated with 40 mg. or less in combination with cholesterol-modifying doses of niacin-containing products; and 3) healthcare professionals are to avoid prescribing simvastatin doses greater than 40 mg. daily when patients are taking the medication diltiazem, due to an increased risk for myopathy. Diltiazem is in a class of calcium channel blockers, used in the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and some types of arrhythmia. It is also an effective preventive medication for migraine.
Have you, your spouse, or parent developed rhabdomyolysis and kidney damage from taking the 80 mg Zocor or similar simvastatin drug? Is a family member in need of kidney dialysis because of taking an 80 mg statin drug?
