Does taking antidepressants during pregnancy create medical problems for your baby?
Previous studies have linked commonly used SSRI antidepressants to birth defects. Overall the risks are small but higher than average than of women not taking SSRI Prozac, Zoloft, and Celexa antidepressants.
In a 2010 study by the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers found that among more than 12,700 U.S. infants born between 1997 and 2004, mothers who used Wellbutrin (generic: bupropion) during early pregnancy had more than double the risk of heart defects compared to infants whose mothers had not used Wellbutrin.
According to Pediatrics, congenital cardiovascular malformations (CCVMs) are among the most common of all medically significant birth defects and are a leading contributor to infant mortality in the United States. Left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) malformations include hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and Shone complex, congenital aortic valve stenosis (AVS), coarctation of the aorta (CoA), and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV).
The study also notes that the absolute risk for left outflow tract heart defects associated with bupropion (Wellbutrin) exposure is small. Nevertheless, risks and benefits of antidepressant medications need to be considered on a case-by-case basis and clearly presented to women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy so that they can make informed decisions with their healthcare professionals.
