FDA OKs Medicis Drug for Combo Therapy

Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. said Friday that regulators approved its emergency treatment for a rare genetic disorder in which the body lacks a key enzyme that breaks down nitrogen in the blood.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Medicis' Ammonul drug for use as combination therapy to treat acute ammonia levels and brain disease associated with the enzyme deficiency. The condition, called Urea Cycle Disorder, leads to potentially fatal blood ammonia levels as nitrogen builds up in the blood.
