FDA Staff Questions Heart Risks of Merck's Arcoxia

Merck & Co. Inc.'s painkiller Arcoxia offers a "marginal" advantage in gastrointestinal safety but appears "worse than" other pain drugs as well as a placebo in terms of deaths and serious cardiovascular problems, U.S. regulatory staff said in documents released on Friday.

US FDA staff: Novartis drug risk similar to Vioxx

WASHINGTON, Feb 4 (Reuters) - U.S. regulatory staff said a Novartis AG trial showed the risk of heart attack, stroke and deaths in patients taking its experimental painkiller Prexige were similar to Merck & Co. Inc.'s now withdrawn Vioxx, documents released on Friday showed.

Prexige, which is not yet approved in the United States, showed greater cardiovascular risks compared to naproxen but similar risks compared to ibuprofen, the reviewers said. The trial also showed Prexige had offered an "advantage" over other pain drugs that can cause stomach problems.
