Locals suing maker of Vioxx

Four Napa County residents are joining a national flood of personal injury lawsuits against drug company Merck & Co., maker of the arthritis drug Vioxx.

Merck pulled Vioxx from the market in September after mounting evidence showed the drug increased users' risk of heart problems. Since then, a growing number of lawsuits have been filed claiming internal company reports show Merck knew there were problems with Vioxx as much as eight years earlier.

The New York law firm of Parker and Waichman, a firm involved in filing Vioxx recall lawsuits in that state, claims in documents it released to the public that Merck officials knew of Vioxx's risks to the heart back in 1996, three years before the drug was approved by the FDA.
