Monheit Law: Uninsured Motorist Lawsuits : UM Articles : 2005-04-19 : Article What does UM/UIM insurance do for you?
Many people do not understand the UM/UIM insurance area (uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage).
In fact, when you buy UM/UIM coverage, you are buying insurance for the other person who is either unisnured (has no insurance) or under-insured (does not have enough insurance). This means that "your insurance company" becomes "their insurance company".
This puts you on the opposite side of the fence with your own insurance campany when you file a lawsuit against the other person who had no insurance when they hit your car. Now your company will essentially defend against your getting money from your policy as if they were that person!
Your insurance company will want to pay you as little as possible.
