Uninsured Motorist - What is it?
What do you get when you buy UM coverage?
In short, you are buying insurance for people who don't bother to buy their own, but are still out driving that uninsured car. When one of those uninsured dirvers causes an accident, having this coverage protects you.
Thus, UM coverage protects you when you get hit by a person who has no insurance.
U coverage is usually optional. However, that does not mean it is unimportant. If you don't have this and you get hit by an uninsured driver, you are usually out of luck because you can't use your own liability.
Thus, when you have UM coverage, your UM policy insurance carrier will have to stand in the shoes of the uninsured person who caused your accident. But this puts your own insurance company as an adversary to you! That is, your insurance company will in essence become "the other driver's insurance company" when you file a claim against the uninsured driver. This means you probably will need a lawyer.
I can assure you that in order to defend the case, your own company will hire a lawyer -- so you should hire one too!
