Series of crashes leaves 1 dead on N.J. Turnpike in S. Jersey

A North Carolina man died of injuries from one of three accidents yesterday morning on the New Jersey Turnpike that were akin to a slow-speed chain reaction, police said. Northbound turnpike traffic in South Jersey was snarled from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. as crews cleared the wreckage, Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman, said. The first accident occurred near Mount Laurel at 4:44 a.m., when a tractor-trailer carrying frozen chicken slammed into the rear of another truck. Flames engulfed the tractor-trailer, but neither driver was injured.
