Every year, an estimated 1.5 million people in the United States sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI). A traumatic brain injury is caused by a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury. Either of these traumas can alter the normal functioning of the brain.
Not all TBIs are severe. A severe traumatic brain injury will be an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia following the injury. Mild TBIs involve a short change in mental acuity or consciousness.
The causes of traumatic brain injury are: falls; cars, bicycles, and motorcycle accidents; being struck by an object such as a hockey puck or baseball bat or being struck against something such as a roller coaster ride; or being assaulted.
Falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries with newborns to toddlers at four years old and adults older than 75. Babies and toddlers are subject to being shaken too much. Males are 1.5 times more likely to suffer from TBI than women.
Living with a traumatic brain injury greatly impacts the injured victim, families and caregivers. The victim can be helpless or distraught. Medical bills become insurmountable. The sheer stress of everyday life can be overwhelming. Sometimes families are so busy coping with the hour-to-hour and day-to-day grind that they forget about seeking legal help because it is just one more thing to do.
