Strattera: Does Strattera cause severe liver damage? What are the side effects? Is your health at risk?
Are you at risk for liver damage caused by Strattera? Do you need a liver transplant caused by the serious side effects of Strattera? Do you need a lawyer familiar with the issues involved in Strattera litigation to pursue your Strattera case?
Strattera is the first and only non-stimulant medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) in children, adolescents, and adults.
Initially advertised by Eli Lilly as the new wonder ADHD drug – doctors and patients are starting to wonder what is going on. There appears to be more side effects with Strattera than was originally promised or hoped for including some cases of liver damage.
Now that Strattera has been prescribed for a few years, more serious side effects are surfacing.
Strattera side effects for children and adolescents include:
- Liver dysfunction
or Severe liver damage such acute hepatitis
- Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes)
- Dark urine
- Tenderness on the right side of the abdomen
- Swelling or hives
- Upset stomach
- Itchy skin
- Persistent flu-like symptoms
- Decreased appetite
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness
- Tiredness
- Mood swings
The most common side effects of Strattera in adults are:
- Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes)
- Liver dysfunction
- Severe liver damage such as acute hepatitis
- Increased heart rate
- Increased blood pressure
- Dark urine
- Tenderness on the right side of the abdomen
- Swelling
- Itchy skin or hives
- Enlarged pupils (eyes)
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
- Nausea
- Decreased appetite
- Dizziness
- Insomnia
- Menstrual cramps
- Painful urination
- Sexual side effects such as decreased libido, impotence, ejaculation problems, and painful sexual intercourse
The number of patients trying Strattera and discontinuing it shortly thereafter appears quite high. There are also a large number of patients who receive little or no benefits from Strattera. Furthermore, Strattera costs more than other ADHD drugs but appears less effective, except at causing liver damage and other reduced quality-of-life side effects or worse – severe liver injury that may progress to liver failure and the need for liver transplants.
Strattera is a relatively new drug but advertised extensively. In 2003, 3.5 million Strattera prescriptions were dispensed in the United States where retail sales exceeded $390 million making the manufacturer -- Eli Lilly -- very rich. Strattera is too new to reveal the serious side effects that may appear today, tomorrow, or in years to come. Proceed with caution when taking new pharmaceutical drugs.
