Brewing fight over drug ads - Strattera and others

An FDA warning letter last month to Eli Lilly & Co. about the accuracy of its recent 60-second TV commercial for Strattera, a drug that treats adult attention deficit disorder, prompted the legal foundation to start monitoring the agency's warnings to pharmaceutical companies.

The FDA asked Lilly to withdraw the Strattera ad because its graphics distracted from statements about the drug's risks, including the fact it had not been tested in geriatric patients. Lilly had already stopped running the ad.

The FDA also accused Lilly of "misleadingly suggesting Strattera is safer than has been demonstrated by substantial evidence or substantial clinical experience."
