Eli Lilly's Strattera (atomoxetine), Johnson & Johnson's Concerta XL (methylphenidate) and UCB's Equasym XL (methylphenidate) are all recommended.
Because it had not been able to differentiate between the drugs on the grounds of clinical effectiveness, NICE advised that when there was a choice the cheapest product should be prescribed.
Generic methylphenidate can cost as little as 34 pounds (50 euros) a year whereas Strattera and the controlled-release once-daily formulations of methylphenidate can cost 20 times more.
