Cancer research supports, and the UN health body has now declared, that homrone therapy, like that in Prempro (Premarin-Provera combination hormone replacement therapy (HRT)), increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
The NIH/WHO study suggests that even with short-term use, the hormone replacement therapy (HRT) of Prempro (a combination of two hormonal components) increases the risk of breast cancer. It may cause breast cancer. Or it may simply accelerate cancer cells into growing. Either way, the result is a more advanced stage of breast cancer. But this breast cancer risk increase is not in every woman.
Short-Term Risk of Prempro Breast Cancer
The WHO study showed an increase that was an alarming 24%. This was a blind palcebo study. It was unblinded when these results were found. All women were immediately taken off the dangerous combination. Breast cancers among women on Prempro were not only more common, they were more advanced! That is more cancer cells and cancer cells growing faster.
Long-Term Risks of Prempro Breast Cancer
There is more than one study showing dangers in Prempro. A second smaller study, based 2,000 women ages 65-79, was done in Washington state. That study also showed that long-term use of Prempro was dangerous in terms of breast cancer. In fact, in the study, it was found there was a 70% risk. And it did not matter how the therapy was delivered. Breast cancer risk in this study was found to be greatest among those women who had used combined hormone therapy the longest, up to 15 years, and the risk of certain invasive cancers increased by up to 170%. Studies show a linear increase in the risk of cancer. Each year, the risk increases by about 10% -- so 10 years out you have double the risk!
