The Premarin and Provera combination and breast cancer
While it is not clear what all of the causes of breast cancer are, studies have convincingly shown that the combination of Premarin and Provera (Prempro) increase the risk of breast cancer.
One of the causes of the increase in breast cancer cases is the fact that women have been on HRT drugs like Premarin and Provera, in combination (Prempro). As a result of the hormones in these drugs, more women develop breast cancer than men -- about 100 cases in females for every one in a man. Women's bodies make more estrogen than men's. Therefore, the conventional wisdom has been that too much estrogen can cause breast cancer. But recent studies show that the Prempro combination of Provera and Premarin are a culprit.
The UN now considers hormone therapy to be carcinogenic. Estrogen (Premarin) is part of the puzzle in the development of breast cancer. But it is not estrogen alone. That would be over-simplifying the problem. But some studies show that estrogen is part of a poison in combination with other hormones -- it can be part of causing cancer. But estrogen is a very beneficial hormone — so Premarin would play a role since it stimulates tissues to grow when women need growth, and it is also a helpful player in response to stress.
Research shows how estrogen works. Doctors know that, like Premarin which comes from the pills, estrogen is probably produced in breast tissue — some from the fat of the breast, some from the ducts themselves. How and why this production continues throughout life is unknown. It is known that later in life, less is produced. It is probably a self-defense mechanism. It is possible that the body can not tollerate Estrogen beyond a certain age.
What doctors know is that the body has many self-regulating or balancing mechanisms — that one hormone is usually balanced by another.
