Judge Rejects Class Action for Monitoring of Prempro Users

A Philadelphia judge refused last week to certify a proposed statewide class action in which women taking the hormone-replacement drug Prempro were seeking medical monitoring.

The Phildelphia judge, Mark I. Bernstein, refused last week to certify a proposed statewide class action in which women were seeking medical monitoring, linking an increased risk of developing breast cancer to the hormone-replacement drug Prempro.

Wyeth argued that patients who use Prempro do not need any special monitoring because they are of post-menopausal age -- the age at which doctors already recommend that women undergo a mammogram once a year to screen for cancer.

New Data Show Most Postmenopausal Women in Study Who Initiated Therapy With Wyeth's Low Dose Hormone Therapies Achieved Increased Bone Mineral Density

The Women's HOPE Study evaluated four low dose options: Premarin 0.3 mg, PREMARIN 0.45 mg, Prempro 0.3 mg/1.5 mg, and PREMPRO 0.45 mg/1.5 mg. The newly published data can be accessed on the Web site for Osteoporosis International, the journal of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. According to Robert Lindsay, MD, PhD, the lead author of this new report and Director, Clinical Research Center, Helen Hayes Hospital, these data add important new information about bone protection with low doses of PREMARIN or PREMPRO. At 24 months, women taking low doses of either PREMARIN or PREMPRO showed significant gains in spine BMD compared with women taking placebo. The percentages of women with an increase in spine BMD on low dose therapy ranged from 63.2% to 79.1% compared with 17.7% for placebo. By dose, the percentages were 63.2% for PREMARIN 0.3, 67.8% for PREMPRO 0.3/1.5, 74.2% for PREMPRO 0.45/1.5, and 79.1% for PREMARIN 0.45. The percentage of women taking PREMARIN 0.625 and PREMPRO 0.625/2.5 who experienced increases in spine BMD were 81.9% and 87.7%, respectively.

Panel cites 'information gap' on relieving menopause

On March 24, 2005, After listening to 10 days' worth of presentations about treatments for hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms, an independent panel of scientists concluded Wednesday that there is insufficient evidence to wholeheartedly endorse any of them. This NIH State-of-the-Science panel supports use of hormone therapy for treatment of moderate to severe menopausal symptoms. A panel meeting in conjunction with this week's Conference on the Management of Menopause-Related Symptoms, convened by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has issued a statement supporting the use of postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) for the management of moderate to severe menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and...

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (WYE) said according to a study, women taking low doses of either Premarin or Prempro, menopause drugs, showed "significant" gains in spine bone mineral density as compared to women taking placebos. Newly published data from the Women's Health, Osteoporosis, Progestin, and Estrogen (HOPE) Study now provide specific information about the percentages of individual postmenopausal women who experienced gains in bone mineral density (BMD) at the spine and the hip when taking low doses of PREMARIN(R) (conjugated estrogens tablets, USP) or PREMPRO for the relief of moderate to severe menopausal symptoms.

HRT warning on cancer check

Herald Sun, Wed, 25 May 2005 5:00 PM PDT WOMEN on hormone replacement therapy could get misleading results from breast cancer tests, Melbourne researchers have warned. Women on HRT who received negative results from their mammograms could still have cancer, a University of Melbourne study has found. Of more than 1500 Victorian women studied, mammograms found cancer in just 66 per cent of those on HRT -- compared with 83 per cent of women not taking HRT. All of the women in the five-year study had breast cancer.

Carcinoma Of The Breast (Breast Cancer)

by Wong Lai Teng Currently, there are more than 180,000 new cases of breast cancer every year in the United States and 46,000 deaths, and it has been estimated that one of every eight American women living to age 95 years will develop breast carcinoma. Until 1983, breast cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths among females; despite an increase in the incidence of breast carcinoma, it is now second to lung cancer because of the larger increase in the number of women developing lung cancer.
