PPA
(Phenylpropanolamine), an ingredient in some cold and sinus medications
and in diet pills, was at one time the fifth most commonly used drug in
the United States. Suspicions about the chemical's safety arose in the
early 1990's. Research eventually confirmed that people who took PPA
were at greater risk of stroke than those who did not. The FDA
eventually warned about the risks associated with products containing
PPA. Manufacturers were required to stop using the chemical as an
ingredient.
While PPA has been banned as an over-the-counter medication, products
that contain PPA may still be found in the medicine cabinets of many
homes in the United States and Canada.
