How do birth control
patches (patch, ortho evra) work?
The hormones in the birth control patches work by preventing a woman's ovaries
from ovulating or releasing eggs. Hormones thicken the cervical mucus which
prevents sperm from joining with an egg. Hormones also thin the lining of the
uterus. Contraceptive patches applied to the skin get hormones into the blood stream and
are removed from the body differently than hormones from birth control pills
taken orally.
The birth control hormone patch works optimally when it is changed on the same day of
the week for three weeks in a row. Pregnancy can happen if an error is made in
using the birth control contraceptive patch especially if it becomes loose or falls off for
more than 24 hours and/or the same patch is left on the skin for more than one
week, therefore, losing its effectiveness.
What is a blood
clot and why are they so dangerous?
When a blood clot (a clump of blood) forms in a vein, it causes inflammation. If
an internal blood clot breaks loose and travels through the circulatory system,
it may become lodged in an important blood vessel and block the flow of blood to
vital organs. The result may be a heart attack, stroke, disabling injury in the
limbs or pulmonary embolism.
Who should not use
birth control patches?
We suggest that no one uses the contaceptive patch because birth control pills are safer and
just as effective. However, doctors have told us that you should not take the hormone patch if you weigh more
than 198 pounds, smoke, have a history of heart attack or strokes, get blood
clots in your legs, have a history of chest pain, are currently pregnant or
lactating, have diabetes, and high blood pressure. You must also tell your
doctor and pharmacist if you’re taking a list of about 50 prescription drugs,
vitamins, and herbal supplements as they affect the effectiveness of the birth
control patch.
Should I contact
Ortho McNeil about my symptoms from the contraceptive birth control patches?
You should contact your doctor and have your doctor file an adverse reaction
report with the FDA. You should also consider contacting an attorney to discuss
your legal rights. You should also call the FDA MedWatch at 1-800-FDA-1088.
If women are dying from the ORTHO EVRA birth control patches, why are they still
being advertised on television?
One answer could be greed. A spokesperson for Ortho McNeil Pharmaceuticals says the
birth control patches are as safe as birth control pills but we know that is simply
not true. ORTHO EVRA birth control patches release 60 percent more estrogen than birth control
pills and medical studies have shown that more estrogen means more blood clots
and other life threatening side effects. Further research has shown that more
women have died from using the birth control contraceptive patch for 4 years than women who
have used birth control pills for longer amounts of time.
