Stage 4 Mesothelioma Cancer
The last stage of Mesothelioma cancer is the most advanced. In stage 4, the cancer has metastasized to the brain, the abdomen, and other organs of the abdominal and chest cavity away from the original tumor site. Life expectancy is not good.
Mesothelioma stage 4 can be determined through a number of different ways.
Mesothelioma cancer has four different stages. The newest way or system used to determine a stage is called the Brigham System which categorizes Mesothelioma according to whether or not tumors can be removed by surgery, and whether the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes.
The oldest of all cancer staging systems is the Butchart System which categorizes Mesothelioma based on the size and spread of the primary tumor.

The TNM System is newer than the Butchart System but older than the Brigham System. It categorizes cancer based on three factors -- the size of the tumor, whether the cancer has spread from its point of origin to nearby lymph nodes, and whether the cancer has metastasized. TNM System may be used to stage pleural and peritoneal Mesothelioma. Like the other systems, the TNM System uses four stages but is more complex since subcategories define the size of tumors and other factors.
Patients with stage 4 have few treatment options due to the spread of cancer to multiple locations. Tumors have penetrated too deeply into organs and tissues to be removed. Stage 4 patients are will lack strength to withstand the physical strain of surgery.
Stage 4 Mesothelioma symptoms include: abdominal pain, severe abdomen fluid buildup, weight loss, blood clots in veins and lungs, jaundice, low blood sugar levels, and fluid in the lungs.
In severe cases, a person may have many tumor masses or a collapsed lung.
Stage 4 treatments are limited to non-surgical palliative treatments that are performed to relieve symptoms of the disease. It’s important that the patient’s family support his or her emotional needs at this time.
