In two companion studies, University of Rochester researchers have identified the cellular mechanisms behind early environmental risks for Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects about 1 percent of Americans over age 60.

The UR research could lead to early intervention in treating Parkinson's, said Opanashuk, including treatment with antioxidants. That could mean oral supplements or ? in the future ? gene-based technologies that deliver antioxidants directly to affected regions of the brain.
