It is caused by excessive exposure to manganese, a metallic chemical element. Although small amounts of manganese are actually needed by the body, overexposure can lead to the development of manganism. Welding Rod injuries include a loss of motor skills and coordination as well as mental and psychological problems. Welding rod injuries are most likely to affect people who are frequently exposed to manganese through their jobs.

Manganism is a form of parkinsonism (similar to Parkinson's diease) and manifests itself through various neurological symptoms which can be seriously disabling. People exposed to welding fumes absorb manganese into their body primarily through inhalation of the fumes.
