Eating at Taco Bell has so far sickened over 160 people in Long Island (New York), New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, South Carolina, and Utah. These victims are suffering from E. coli O157:H7, one of the hundreds of strains of bacteria. This strain of E. coli produces a powerful toxin that can cause severe illness such as bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the symptoms usually clear up within a week to 10 days.
