Report: Merck Knew About Vioxx's Problems In 2000

November 1, 2004

The Wall Street Journal reported that Merck knew as early as 2000 that its arthritis medication, Vioxx, was linked to increased risks of heart attacks and strokes. This is based on e-mails and marketing information which have been gathered during litigation against Merck. Merck pulled Vioxx off the market on September 30, 2004. Vioxx had over 20 million people take it in the US alone, and accounted for $2.5 billion in sales annually for Merck (around 10% of their revenue).
