Hydroxycut Q&A with the FDA
More Hydroxycut Drug Information
The FDA and manufacturer Iovate Health Sciences recalled weight loss supplement Hydroxycut on May 1, 2009.
The following questions and answers from the FDA may be able to help you understand why Hydroxycut was recalled, how it could affect you, and what to do if you've been taking this supplement.
What causes problems with Hydroxycut?
Hydroxycut was once made using ephedra, but this was taken out of the formula in 2004. Ephedra may have caused some of the liver problems in the past, but today, that is no longer the case. The FDA is not yet sure which ingredient or combination of ingredients is responsible for Hydroxycut's problems.
What kinds of Hydroxycut are affected by the recall?
There are fourteen types of Hydroxycut that have been recalled. They are the following:
- Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
- Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
- Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
- Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
- Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
- Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
- Hydroxycut 24
- Hydroxycut Carb Control
- Hydroxycut Natural
The FDA also recommends that consumers stop taking all other types of Hydroxycut, though they have not been officially recalled. The FDA's website will keep consumers updated on future Hydroxycut recalls.
Do You Have A Hydroxycut Case? »What medical conditions are associated with the recall and what are the symptoms?
Hydroxycut has been linked to liver injury in 23 people and may also cause other serious medical conditions, such as heart problems, muscle damage, and seizures. Signs that you may be adversely affected by Hydroxycut include jaundice, vomiting and nausea, fatigue, unusual weakness, stomach pains, brown urine, and light-colored stools. Symptoms may appear right away, after years of using Hydroxycut, or even after the patient has discontinued use.
What should I do with the Hydroxycut I have left?
You should dispose of all Hydroxycut products you haven't used. It is also important to avoid cutting your dosage, as even small amounts of this supplement can cause problems.
What supplements can I use in Hydroxycut's place for weight loss?
Talk to your health care provider to learn more about supplements that can safely help you lose weight or, better yet, how to lose weight through diet and exercise alone.
