New Research Sets Bright Future in Sports and Recreation for Children with Disabilities

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - February 10, 2004 - The Cure Our Children Foundation, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to children, announced today the publication of its extensive research showing that full integration of disabled children into existing school and community sports and recreation teams is feasible and helpful for all children.

In addition to a wide-range of original research, interviews were conducted with prominent disabled sports experts and health care professionals. And, in determining the positive aspects of integration, the research also reveals many diverse, little known options for disabled participation in sports and recreation activities.

Key elements include:

  • New instructions from experts on how to accommodate the disabled in sports and recreation activities.
  • A model sports policy that can be adopted by baseball, soccer, or other school and community teams to accommodate disabled children on their regular teams.
  • A chart listing regular sports with the corresponding alternatives for the disabled.
  • Names, phone numbers, and web links of over a hundred disabled sports and advocacy organizations.
  • Extensive information on which sports activities have organized associations and teams specifically designed for the disabled.
  • Easy-to-understand guidance on how the laws protect participation by the disabled in sports and recreation activities.

The Cure Our Children Foundation identifies important under-researched children's issues and devotes extensive resources to explain and guide parents, professionals, government and the public. The results of the research are provided for free as a public service. Research is supported by donations to the foundation. The foundation has a number of other exciting research projects in the planning stages. The foundation receives thousands of website visits every month.
