Hydroxycut weight loss products are made by Iovate Health Sciences Inc, of Ontario, Canada and distributed by Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc., of Blasdell, New York.
Dietary supplements and weight-loss aids like Hydroxycut are not subject to the same standards as medications that are FDA approved. Weight loss companies can make any health claim they want to without substantiation.

So far, the FDA has not determined which ingredients, dosages, or other health-related factors are associated with risks related to these 14 Hydroxycut products. The products contain a variety of ingredients such as herbs, chemicals, caffeine, and metals, some noted for liver toxicity.
According to the Hydroxycut website, the company “conducts internal analysis of individual ingredients, and undertakes extensive medical, scientific, and toxicological literature reviews on the safety of the ingredients during the development stage of each product. Additionally, third-party experts from the leading independent scientific firm specializing in ingredient assessment, toxicology and product safety for the nutritional and pharmaceutical industry review the safety of Iovate’s ingredients and formulas before products are introduced in the marketplace. Only after this external review is completed does Iovate release a formula.”
Prior to 2004, Hydroxycut contained ephedra or Ma Huang but ephedra was removed from the U.S. diet supplement industry after a big FDA crackdown. Hydroxycut has gone through many formulaic changes since it became ephedra free.

Products like Hydroxycut are marketed to athletes as a way of boosting energy and improving athletic performance. Diet pills and bodybuilding supplements are pretty much alike. They all have the same ingredients, more or less, packaged differently, and marketed heavily.
