Ephedra is a natural herb that is used to help
people with weight loss, to boost energy and to improve physical performance.
Unfortunately, natural ephedra is not always safe for weight loss. Products containing ephedra have
been implicated in over 100 deaths. Over 1,000 people had serious adverse
reactions to ephedra in 2002 -- many who had taken this for weight loss. Most recently, ephedra was implicated in the
death of Steve Bechler, a baseball player who died after taking the pills to
help him with weight loss. What he, and many others who may have consumed products like ultra carb weight loss did not realize is that products such as Yellow Jackets, Ultra Carb, and Xenadrine have health risks from ephedra.
In Congressional hearings, the American Medical Association recommended that
ephedra be banned, saying that the possible benefits of ephedra do not
justify the risk of heart attack, stroke or death. Use of the herbal
stimulant has already been banned by the National Football League and other
organizations. Over twenty states currently have laws on the books regarding
the sale of products containing ephedra.
The FDA and the FTC are acting to hold companies that sell ephedra
responsible. Ephedra litigation has also begun, with people seeking compensation for
damages caused by ephedra weight loss products.
