May 1, 2009: The FDA advised that the dietary Hydroxycut dietary supplement must be recalled and the company has pulled all 14 Hydroxycut products. Hydrixycut was available in grocery stores and pharmacies and was claimed to be safe and contained only "natural ingredients". Over 9 million packages were sold in 2008.

According to Dr. Linda Katz, head of the FDA's food and nutrition division, told of at least 23 reports of liver damage which include a 19-year-old boy who died in 2007.

Previously, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned Hydoxycut products that contained Epehdra. Years ago, the FDA said it will ban the weight-loss aid ephedra, saying it is unsafe and can cause heart attacks and stroke.

The FDA ban on ephedra is a significant development, as this is the first time that the FDA has banned an herbal supplement, such as Ephedra. The FDA Ephedra ban will take place within 60 days, according to the FDA sources.

The agency is concerned over damage being caused by Hydroxycut. Previously the FDA banned Ephedra becuase dieters were likely to do more harm than good by taking ephedra, which raises metabolism.

The new Hydroxycut recall was immediate. When ephedra was banned, it became effective 60 days after the new rule is published, but the FDA gave no immediate date for publication of the rules related to the Ephedra ban.
