Loose dentures are a problem that plague many denture wearers.

Denture wearers may avoid the food that they enjoy or lack self confidence because they are concerned that their dentures will fall out. Accordingly, many people who wear dentures seek popular denture adhesives to help keep the dentures securely in place. Some of the most popular products on the market include Fixodent and Super Poligrip. Users of these products should be aware, however, that these products contain zinc and that zinc can be dangerous.

What is Fixodent? Fixodent is a popular type of denture adhesive manufactured by Proctor & Gamble and sold in drugstores, supermarkets and by online retailers nationwide. Fixodent is applied directly to the dentures which are then placed in the mouth. The adhesive in the Fixodent is formulated to work with the mouth's moisture to create a tight seal that lasts for up to 12 hours. Fixodent contains zinc in both its cream and powder forms.

What are Poligrip and Super Poligrip?

Poligrip and Super Poligrip are competitors of Fixodent that are manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. Like Fixodent, these denture adhesives are available for sale in grocery stores, drugstores and online retailers nationwide. The Poligrip denture adhesive is available in several different formulas. It is available as a paste, powder or in precut strips. Most Poligrip and Super Poligrip products contain zinc.

Are Fixodent and Super Poligrip Safe?

Fixodent and many Poligrip products contain zinc. The manufacturers claim that zinc increases the holding powder of the adhesive and that the relatively small amounts of zinc found in their products is safe.

However, the American Academy of Neurology disagrees. In a study published in 2008 doctors and scientists from the Mayo Clinic, University of Colorado and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center found that chronic use of large amounts of denture cream can result in serious neurological disease and hypocupremia, a copper deficiency in the blood.

While zinc free alternatives to traditional denture adhesive formulas are now on the market, the popular formulas containing zinc continue to be sold and continue to put patients at risk of zinc poisoning. Accordingly, patients should make educated decisions about which denture adhesive they use, particularly if they apply adhesive cream often and /or have been wearing dentures for a number of years.

Do You Have A Fixodent or Poligrip Case? »

Denture users who have been physically harmed by the zinc contained in Fixodent, Poligrip and Super Poligrip products may be entitled to legal damages for the physical injuries caused, lost income if they missed time from work because of their injuries and, pain and suffering. An experienced products liability attorney can help you determine whether you have a case and what the damages may be in your individual case.
