Do you know about the dangers created by excessive CT Scan radiation?
Most CT scan patients don't, but the CT scan manufacturers, the hospitals that administer the tests and the FDA have known about the dangers for years and have failed to take the appropriate actions to protect patients from this potentially fatal problem. In fact, according to an investigation by The New York Times, the problem seems to be increasing rather than decreasing.
The Danger of Excessive Radiation
CT scans provide detailed pictures and are often used to diagnose conditions that X Rays can't capture, such as cancer and strokes. When properly used, CT scans contain 100-400 times the amount of radiation as X rays. When improperly used, the level of radiation rises dramatically.
The Symptoms of Excessive radiation
Many hospitals do not record the level of radiation used in a CT scan test and others have only recently started keeping that data. Most hospitals will not contact you to let you know that you have been exposed to excessive radiation during a CT scan and that you need to be on the lookout for serious side effects. Therefore, it is important to recognize the symptoms of excessive radiation.
The first symptoms often include skin chaffing, burns, hair loss, disorientation and fogginess. CT scan hair loss usually follows a certain distinct pattern. It is usually seen as a hair loss band that is otherwise medically inexplicable.
The Consequences of Excessive Radiation
As the symptoms progress, radiation poisoning can result in cancer, brain damage and organ failure. The poisoning can be severe enough to cause permanent disabilities or death.
Who's to Blame For Your Injuries?
In October 2009, the FDA announced that it was investigating more than 200 cases of patients being exposed to potentially toxic levels of radiation at one single hospital. The FDA has not yet announced the results of that investigation, nor has the agency taken any steps to increase regulations on the use of CT scans.
Likewise, CT scan manufacturers, technicians and hospitals are not admitting any fault. The manufacturers believe that the increased doses of radiation are due to the incorrect use of the CT scan machines by technicians while technicians and hospitals blame GE Healthcare, Toshiba and other CT scan manufacturers for the increased radiation.
