Seat Belts 101

Volvo was the first to use inventor Nils Bohlin's three-point seat belt -- a lap strap and a shoulder strap -- as a standard feature in Sweden in 1959. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says wearing a seat belt reduces your risk of fatal injury when sitting in the front seat of a passenger car by 45 percent. Don't think you can get away without wearing your seat belt if your car has ear bags. If you're not strapped in, you could be ejected from the vehicle during a crash. In 2004, 74 percent of people thrown from a vehicle during a crash were killed. More women traditionally wear seat belts than men. You can even buy a seat belt for your dog. Dogs, like small children, shouldn't sit in the front passenger seat because they could be hurt by an air bag.
