So how can you tell if your newly remodeled or built home has the bad stuff in it?

You definitely do not want to wait until you and your family feel ill, or until your pipes and copper wiring start to corrode.

There is one way to find out, especially if your house was constructed between 2004 and 2006 and you live Southern Florida, Louisiana or the Carolinas. It is not hard to do. Crawl into the attic. That is one place where the dry wall or plasterboard is not covered with sheetrock and paint. If you see the name KNAUF on the plasterboard, call your builder.

Tracking down the players in the Chinese Drywall Drama is confusing. Knauf plasterboard was produced by Tianjin Company, Ltd. That company was a subsidiary of the German based construction material conglomerate called Knauf International. Tianjin entered into a contract with Knauf, who entered into a contract with several home builders. The majority of the drywall was sold to a builder named Lennar Corporation. However, they were not the only ones. Homes built by South Kendall Construction and Aubuchon Homes also have been reported to contain Chinese drywall tested positive for toxic chemicals. Ryland Homes has also been cited.

How extensive is the problem? No one has put a figure to that as of yet. However, the National Gypsum Association, (gypsum being one of the main ingredients in drywall plasterboards) says between 2002 and 2006, the Chinese produced enough to build over 30, 000 homes. Some estimate up to 100,000 homes may have the substandard drywall in them. From January of 2006 to the following September, over 52 million pounds of the Knauf plasterboard was unloaded at the docks in New Orleans. Not only that, but another report suggests almost 37 million pounds were shipped to Florida ports directly from China during 2004 and 2006.

If you or a loved one lives in Louisiana or Florida and remodeled or moved into a newly constructed home between 2004 and 2006, crawl into the attic. Although suppliers such as Home Depot and Lowes deny purchasing drywall boards form China or Knauf based companies, other subcontractors may have. It is better to find out now than later when you start smelling rotten eggs or the pipes and copper in you walls start corroding.
