More Chinese Drywall Information
Throughout South Florida homes are being torn apart down to the bare studs.
The reason is that the air and drywall in them have tested positive for toxins stemming from substandard drywall imported from China. While homeowners seek temporary shelter, their houses are being virtually demolished and rebuilt from the studs up.
The toxic chemicals that were found in the drywall caused pipes and cooper wiring to corrode. But it is also reported to have caused health issues in several homeowners. Mostly sulfides and disulfides have been identified as the culprits. These chemicals can produced eye problems and respiratory complications. When exposed for long periods of time to certain high levels, the gasses can produce nervous system disorders, kidney malfunction and lung paralysis.
Do You Have A Chinese Drywall Case? »So what are the demolition crews doing to protect themselves from the poisonous gasses eking from the plasterboards? The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has very specific guidelines when it comes to handling toxins like these found in the Chinese drywalls.
Hazardous material procedures must be followed or the workers and their companies are subject to hefty fines and possible dismissal from the project. Ventilation masks and, in some cases, hazard suits are required. Frequent hand and skin washing has to occur. Protective eyewear must be used at all times within a certain number of feet of the toxins. One substance known as CS2 has the potential to be flammable, so extra cautions are initiated when it is discovered.
So far only very low levels of the hazardous chemicals have been found in tested samples. That's good news. Even though there is no conclusive evidence that anyone has died or been hospitalized due to complications from the toxins, precautions are still warranted. Once those walls are opened, trapped fumes can escape. If the material is hazard enough to corrode copper and PVC pipes, think of what it might potentially do to humans.
