Knowing Triggers For Back Injuries Can Help Prevent Them

Back injuries are a common cause of workplace injuries and workers' compensation claims, accounting for a fifth to a quarter of all claims.

Back injuries can occur in any type of working environment to employees of all ages. Someone who does manual labor can injure his back, as can someone who sits at a desk all day.

Employees and their employers can take some simple steps to prevent back injuries if they know what things cause or contribute to them.

"According to the University of British Columbia Back Study, the following risk factors have consistently been found to be related to back pain and back injuries:
· increasing age and length of job tenure
· working postures
· repeated lifting and heavy labor
· whole body vibration
· falls or other injury-causing events
· previous back pain
· work-related psychosocial factors, such as low job satisfaction, control, or support
· body condition and morphology, including being overweight, tall, or in poor physical condition
· smoking
