Nurse pleads guilty in body parts scam

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- A former surgical nurse has admitted participating in the illegal sale of body parts and tissue from 244 dead Philadelphia residents.

Cruceta was employed by Biomedical Tissue Services of Fort Lee, N.J. Bruce Mastromarino, the company's founder, allegedly made agreements with three funeral-home operators in 2004 to supply human tissue, officials said.

FDA regulations require that, before tissues are released for distribution, blood samples from each donor be provided to the testing laboratory for donor testing. Each sample should be clearly linked to an individual donor and each tissue clearly linked to that donor. In some instances, blood samples didn't come from the same donor as the linked tissues which resulted in communicable disease testing from the blood sample may not correctly reflect donor status. http://www.fda.gov/

On Feb 3., 2006, the FDA's investigates BTS and finds there are serious deficiencies in manufacturing practices. As a result, agency reason believes the company may not manufacture, since that would present a danger to public health. The risk is of communicable disease transmission, according to Margaret O'K. Glavin, FDA's Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs.

Thus, the FDA's is enforcing the current regulatory framework for Human Tissue and Cellular and Tissue Based Products (HCT/Ps). This will provide strong measures to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of communicable diseases by HCT/Ps according to Jesse L. Goodman, MD, MPH, director of FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.
