Iowa Woman Sues Company over Tissue Implants

"A Rockwell woman who had bone and tissue implanted during spinal surgery is suing a biomedical company that harvested the material, saying they were illegally removed from people too old or sick to be qualified donors. The federal lawsuit, filed by Jill Symonds, 44, is the first of several that could be filed in Iowa against Biomedical Tissue Services, according to her attorneys. The complaint also names two East Coast funeral homes, a New York mortician and at least three companies involved in distribution of the body parts. The lawsuit alleges the bone and tissue implanted in Symonds in 2004 were illegally taken from New York funeral homes and mortuaries and improperly screened for viruses, cancer, HIV and other diseases."
