Health Canada warns doctors, patients over Bextra COX-2 anti-inflammatory drug

Health Canada is warning people about heart and skin problems associated with the painkiller Bextra.
- Many patients switched to Bextra after Vioxx was pulled from shelves.
- A recent clinical trial found patients who took Bextra for pain after coronary artery bypass graft surgery experienced heart attacks or strokes, blood clots in the legs or lungs and infections or other complications.
- Bextra's manufacturer, Pfizer, is planning long-term studies on the cardiovascular safety of Bextra for arthritis patients.
