Heart problems and deaths from Adderall
The problem is that while Health Canada is acting proactively on behalf of
patients taking Adderall XR and Adderall, the FDA does nothing. There have been
20 international reports of sudden death in patients taking either Adderall
(sold in the United States, not in Canada) or Adderall XR (sold in Canada).
These Adderall-related deaths were not associated with overdose, misuse, or
abuse.
If the FDA doesn’t take this seriously – who will?
The FDA concluded that in the pediatric population, potential risk factors
include cardiac abnormalities that may be undiagnosed, positive family history
for ventricular arrhythmias -- and as yet -- unidentified factors that may cause
excessive levels of stimulant to accumulate in children who are taking what
appears to be normal doses.

Health Canada, the counterpart agency similar to the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), suspends the market authorization of Adderall XR, a drug
prescribed for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and
adults.
As of February 2005, Health Canada informed Canadians that it has instructed
Shire Pharmaceuticals Group plc, the manufacturer of Adderall XR, to withdraw it
from the Canadian pharmaceutical marketplace. Adderall XR, a Central Nervous
System (CNS) stimulant, was approved in Canada on January 23, 2004.
Health Canada has suspended Adderall XR’s marketing authorization due to safety
information concerning the association of sudden deaths, heart-related deaths,
and strokes in children and adults taking the usual recommended doses of
Adderall and Adderall XR. The immediate release form of Adderall has never been
marketed in Canada.
Health Canada is advising patients who are currently being treated with Adderall
XR to talk to their doctor immediately about using Adderall XR and select safer
treatment alternatives.
A Canadian preliminary review of safety data for the other related stimulants
authorized for use in ADHD treatment has been conducted. In that review, the
incidence of serious adverse reactions leading to death was higher in Adderall
and Adderall XR combined than in the other drugs of this class.
Health Canada has asked manufacturers of other related stimulants approved for
the treatment of ADHD to provide a thorough review of their worldwide safety
data. Information updates will be provided by Health Canada as they become
available.
