Bone Density Claims
In November 1990, a New Zealand women’s health
activist raised concerns about the potential loss of bone density in young women
using Depo-Provera. A red flag was raised after the results of a small New
Zealand study demonstrated that women using the injection for longer than five
years had lost substantial amounts of bone density in the spine and hip,
possibly increasing their risk of developing osteoporosis or thinning of the
bones by 50 percent. The study demonstrated that bone density in
the spine and hip was lower in Depo Provera users than in other women.
Fourteen years later in November 2004, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
issued a “Black Box” warning about the long-term use of Depo Provera stating
that recent research suggested prolonged use of DEPO PROVERA may result in
significant loss of bone density. Now there is renewed focus on stopping Depo Provera.
The loss of bone density (BMD) is a
problem for all women using Depo Provera but the FDA warning states: This loss
of BMD is of particular concern during adolescence and early adulthood, a
critical period of bone accretion. The warning further states that the loss of
bone density is greater the longer the drug is used and it may not be completely
reversible after discontinuation of the drug.
While there is greatest concern over the link between Depo Provera and Osteoporosis, DEPO PROVERA and Breast Cancer Concerns exist as well.
The possibility of a link between Depo Provera and breast cancer was first
considered in the early 1970s, after breast cancers were found in beagles
treated for more than three years with a dose of Depo Provera equivalent to 25
times that of the human contraceptive dose. However, those studies were
eventually discounted because beagles were not appropriate models for
determining what the potential effects of Depo Provera would be on women.
