1991 WHO Depo Provera Study
In 1991 after DEPO PROVERA is being used by
women in more than 90 countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded
that – overall – women taking DEPO PROVERA do not have an increased risk of
breast cancer. In addition, breast cancer risk did not increase the longer a
woman stayed on the contraceptive by injection DEPO PROVERA. The study did find
a slight increase in the risk of breast cancer during the first four years of
use, primarily in women under 35. Somehow the WHO concluded that the statistics
against DEPO PROVERA were weak and dismissed them.
But the National Women's Health Network
disagrees with the DEPO PROVERA research conclusions. In testimony presented
to FDA's Fertility and Maternal Health Drugs Advisory Committee a representative
of the National Women's Health Network said that the WHO studies were conducted
in countries where breast cancer rates were less than half that of the United
States and therefore could not be accurately applied to women in this country.
Also comparing the breast cancer risk to that associated with oral
contraceptives is also misleading because DEPO PROVERA is taken by injection
every 12 weeks. Only three epidemiologic studies have been done on Depo Provera
and breast cancer and all three raise a red flag with disturbing results.
